April
Musings: The first day of spring arrived several days ago and our
lawns are beginning to turn a beautiful green.
The rain has arrived and we are again feeling good about the coming
potential growing season. Our
enthusiasm is on the increase and the smell of freshly tilled soil and the
aroma of newly mowed hay is already alluring our nostrils.
We can hardly wait to roll the texture of the soil in our hands, to
put that first dormant seed in the prepared seedbed and to get a feel for
the moisture of the hay. Why are
we so willing to gamble with the weather, the commodity market and the
instability of the economy? Why
are we so willing to rise before dawn and work late into the night with the
natural commodities offered by mother earth?
Is it because we have a love for life that goes beyond the monetary?
Is it the challenge to beat the odds of nature and reap the rewards
of hard work and a job well done? Or
is it the partnership that we have with nature and the trust we have in her?
I suppose there are many answers to these questions.
Perhaps the reason that inspires us the most is this:
we have learned that “we are no fool to give up what we cannot
keep to gain what we dare not lose!” —- a love
for our God, our families, our work, and our land.
